In Memory of Ms. Crisp
 Mary Joyce Taylor Crisp, affectionately known as “Ms.
Crisp,” passed away September 26, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Medical
Center in Michigan. She was born on February 8, 1926. Crisp was the
first director of student activities at Johnson C. Smith University
starting on January 1, 1965. During her 36-year tenure, she also
held the position of coordinator of special events. She retired in
2001 and stayed on campus until she moved to be with her daughter
last fall.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Ann Mitchell, who lives in
Michigan. Mitchell graduated from JCSU in 1977. A private service
will be held in Michigan on Saturday, September 30, 2006. A memorial
service will be held in the Jane M. Smith Memorial Church at JCSU at
a later date.
In lieu of flowers, her family is requesting that donations be
made to Johnson C. Smith University, C/O Ron Matthews, Director of
Alumni Affairs, 100 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, NC
28216.

Class Notes
Class
of 1930
Thomas “Jack” Martin (deceased) was recently honored by
the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system by having the West Charlotte
High School football stadium renamed in his honor. Jack coached
football, basketball, tennis, and swimming during his 38 years of
service at West Charlotte High School.
Class of 1947
Dr. Ora Mobley Sweeting was presented with a resolution
from the Los Angeles City Council, City Attorney and City Controller
for her contribution to humanity. Her work as an activist has had a
lasting impact on the people of New York and the City of Angels. Dr.
Sweeting's son, Ezekiel Mobley, Jr. wrote a book called "Nobody Gave
Me Permission: Memoirs of a Harlem Activist" that tells the story of
her struggle for human understanding and dignity. Ezekiel recently
passed away. Dr. Sweeting has received numerous awards and honors.
She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Class of 1949
The Reverend Dr. Joseph A. Gaston was named the Johnson
C. Smith Theological Seminary 2006 Distinguished Alumnus. The award
was presented at the 139th Founders' Day Convocation on April 11,
2006. The award was presented in "Recognition of Dedicated Service
and Outstanding Achievements as Administrator, Preacher, Presbyter,
Writer, Scholar and Community Leader."
Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary is the Presbyterian Church
(USA) entity of the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in
Atlanta, Ga. It is one of six denominational seminaries in the
Center with a common academic program. Johnson C. Smith Theological
Seminary existed on the JCSU campus as a graduate entity until 1969,
when it moved to Atlanta to become a part of the Interdenominational
Center.
Class of 1951
Joe Robinson will be one of four men in the 18th class of
inductees into Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame in Cramer Mountain
Country Club. Robinson coached countless student-athletes at two
high schools, one junior high and elementary school for more than 30
years.
Class of 1955
Eva Clayton was the graduation speaker for Kittrell Job
Corps on July 28, 2006. Clayton most recently completed a three-year
assignment with the Food Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (FAO), Rome, Italy, as Assistant Director-General. She also
served with distinction for 10 years as the US Representative of
North Carolina's 1st Congressional District.
Class of 1961
Bernard L. Holley was elected Grand Master of the Most
Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the State of New York. He
joined Prince Hall Lodge No. 38 in New York City in 1967. He has
served the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the State of
New York in many capacities.
Class of 1962
Judith Washington was the Woman's Day speaker for Slades
Chapel AME Zion Church, located in Morganton, N.C. Washington is
currently an attorney with Legal Aid of North Carolina-Pittsboro
Office where she provides legal representation to persons with
low/no wealth in a six-county area. She specializes in housing law.
Class of 1966
The Washington Post (Sept 9, 2006) featured
"Looking Back at School's Loss," with the District of Columbia
Ketcham Elementary School students working on a banner to honor
Ketcham student Rodney Dickens and teacher James Debeuneure, who
died aboard American Airlines Flight 77 when it crashed into the
Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001.
Class of 1968
Dr. Beverly Rose has been named assistant vice chancellor
for student affairs administration at Winston-Salem State University
(N.C.).
Class of 1969
Jacqueline Belton-Pharr recently retired from the
District of Columbia Public Schools system. She was honored for her
34 years of outstanding service as an elementary school teacher and
licensed professional counselor. Students, parents, teachers,
representatives from the D.C.P.S and the Washington Teachers Union
attended the event honoring her. She is currently providing pro bono
services through her business, Your Empowerment Services, INC
(YES,Inc)
Class of 1970
Clara Foster presented a poem at the first HBCU
Scholarship banquet for the Reclaiming Our Youth Leadership Program,
held at the Henderson, N.C. Convention Center.
Class of 1971
North Carolina Governor Mike Easley has reappointed Lewis
J. Isaac of Asheville, N.C. to the North Carolina Council of Sickle
Cell Syndrome. Isaac is a training coordinator for the city of
Asheville.
Class of 1974
Carolyn Latimore Means was recently promoted to principal
at West Rowan High School in Cleveland, N.C.

Class of 1982
Lorraine Smith has been chosen as a spokesperson for
Boston.com, an online newspaper of the Boston Globe. Chosen
out of hundreds of entries, the major campaign will kick off in
October where Smith will promote Boston.com with a series of
television and radio commercials as well as print ads on Boston.com,
the Boston Globe newspaper, and various magazines, as well as
a host of other print ads throughout the city of
Boston.
Class of 1992
Tamara Thompson is co-owner of Sadie's Soulful Southern
Experience located at 5708 North Sharon Amity, #H, Charlotte, N.C.
Sadie's serves a variety of traditional soulful southern dishes as
well as sandwiches and salads.
Class of 1993
Desi Campbell will be hosting the 14th annual session of
the National Collegiate Music Conference on November 16-18, 2006, in
Greensboro, N.C. The conference consists of more than 1500 students
from more than 100 high schools, colleges and universities
throughout the country. The conference was founded on the campus of
JCSU in 1992 by Campbell.

Gladys G. Pierce is the new Executive Director at The
Oaks, a Residential Assisted Living facility in Burlington, N.C.
Class of 1995
Nicole Balaam was featured in The Charlotte Post
newspaper (Sept. 14) for starting her business called B-Risque, an
alternative fitness studio. Classes include Yogalates, a combination
of Yoga and Pilates, Zumbia, a cardio class which embraces Latin,
Hip Hop and Salsa moves and beginner pole dancing. B-Risque also
provides a variety of other fitness classes.
Jeannine F. Hunter recently became a Web producer at
NewsChannel5.com, a CBS affiliate in Nashville, Tenn. Hunter's
journalism experience and specialties include coverage of diverse
cultures and religions in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast such as
sexual minorities, Spanish-speaking communities and Southern
Baptists. Recently, she started a three-year term as a member of a
new advisory board for the University of Tennessee's School of
Information Sciences where she earned a Master of Science degree.
Class of 1999
Cheris Hodges was featured in The Charlotte
Observer newspaper (Sept. 10, 2006) for her determination in
becoming an author. For years, she dreamed of becoming a successful
author. She has written five books: "Revelations" (2003), "Cautious
Heart" (2004), "A Love of Her Own" (2005), "Second Chances at Love"
(2006), and "The Business of Love" (2006). Hodges is currently the
features editor for the The Charlotte Post.
Class of 2005
DeMishea Charleston is currently a graduate student at
Norfolk State University majoring in mass media management. She was
chosen for the Disney Communications Internship in Orlando, Fla.,
starting Aug 21, 2006.
Nikiya Campbell has accepted a new position as a programming
assistant at the WB/FOX network in Buffalo, N.Y.
