Johnson C. Smith University has again secured a top spot in U.S. News & World Report America’s Best Colleges ranking released earlier this month. The national publication ranked JCSU 45th out of the 106 colleges in the south that were ranked. This is the fifth consecutive year that the national magazine has identified JCSU as a Top Tier Institution among Comprehensive Colleges that offer bachelor’s degrees. “We are pleased that U.S News & World Report has recognized our outstanding academic programs and students by including JCSU on their list,” said Johnson C. Smith University President, Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy. This is the second time in three months that the University has received accolades for its academic programs. JCSU is also 22nd in the nation when it comes to producing African-American students with Computer Science degrees. Johnson C. JCSU Helps Displaced Hurricane Katrina Victims
Johnson C. Smith University is continuing to help Hurricane Katrina victims and their families both personally and spiritually. The University has accepted 12 college students displaced from Dillard and Xavier Universities in Louisiana. Three of those students have chosen to attend the university this fall.“It’s very important for us to make sure that those students have some place to go to continue their studies,” said Johnson C. Smith President Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy. “We fully expect students displaced by the storms to transfer back to their original school after a full recovery has taken place.” In addition to accepting displaced students, JCSU faculty, staff and students have volunteered countless hours through the American Red Cross to provide assistance to more than 1,000 storm victims who are using the Charlotte Coliseum as their temporary home. JCSU faculty, staff and students are also joining forces with the United Negro College Fund to raise money for our sister schools ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. The campuses of Dillard University, Xavier University and several other colleges have been severely damaged by the storm and its aftermath. That fundraising campaign should end within the next two weeks. Finally, JCSU’s Religious Life Program and the Student Government Association presented a worship service for hurricane victims last week in the Jane M. Smith Memorial Church. The service included singing, praying, liturgical dancing, and speaking. During the service, each campus organization was asked to give their hurricane relief offering.

SMITH SCHOLARSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT
SPONSORED BY THE WASHINGTON, DC METROPOLITAN AREA ALUMNI CHAPTER On Monday, August 22, 2005 the Third Annual Johnson C. Smith University Scholarship Golf Tournament was held at the beautiful Marlborough Country Club in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Participating players came from as far away as Pennsylvania, but most came from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia area. For our event, the format used was a four man Scramble with a Captain's Choice. Following registration and time on the practice putting green and driving range, at eight thirty nearly sixty eager male and female golfers proceeded to their assigned tees to "drive it true; chip it close; and sink the putt" to help support a student at JCSU. All players understood that proceeds from the tournament go to provide scholarships to students. In addition to the anticipated fun and fellowship there would also be prizes for team performance, longest drives and closest to the pin on select holes. Upon completion of play the golfers gathered in the Club's dining room and enjoyed a lunch of grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, Italian sausages and chicken breast with a bag of chips, and lemonade or iced tea. During that time players learned that prizes went to the following: Team Play First Place score (60) Vincent Perry Jean Miller-Colbert William Rodgers Dave Ross Second Place score (63) James Jenkins Willie Clayborne Joseph Brown Howard Lane Third Place score (64) John Simms Rocky Smalls Juanita Williams Francene Foote Longest Drive Man - Joseph "Cowboy" Brown Woman - Jean Miller-Colbert Closest to the Pin Man - John Johnson Woman - Jean Miller-Colbert
